The Fisheries Commission of Ghana on Tuesday March 19, 2024 met with fish farmers at the Assembly Hall of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly.
The fish farmers comprised of farmers from Ga-South, Ga-West and Weija-Gbawe Municipalities.
An introduction was done by Madam Diana Mensah who is also a fish farmer. There was an address by Hon. Michael Danquah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Weija-Gbawe Municipality. In his address, he emphasized on the need of farmers to exist in the Municipality and how their existence bring joy to the faces of the people since we all depend on food for survival.
He applauded the farmers for helping in reducing the unemployment rate in the Municipality and urged those who are rearing the fishes alone to employ people especially the youth in their Municipalities to support them in their farms. He advised them to work tirelessly to ensure better productivity and gave them the assurance of helping them when the need arises.
The fish farmers were educated on the need of cooperation by the Co-operative society in the Assembly. Numerous questions were asked and answered after the education. Alhaji Mohammed Basiru, a former MCE for the Ga-South Municipal Assembly and also the CEO of Jawara Farms located at Sowutuom also enlightened the fish farmers on certain key issues.
Three groups were formed (that’s farmers from Ga-South, Ga-East and Weija-Gbawe Municipality) which according to the co-operative society, they will be nurtured as well as their grievances being addressed.
The farmers disclosed their challenges such as high mortality rate, pricing, lack of office for supervision and storage facilities and each group shared their action point, that’s their expectation of the end of a given period.
