67th INDEPENDENCE DAY MARKED IN WEIJA-GBAWE MUNICIPALITY

The Weija-Gbawe Municipality celebrated the 67th Independence Day of Ghana on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Islamic Basic School Complex Park at Gbawe.

The ceremony, with the theme, ‘’Our Democracy, Our Pride’’ had the participation of sixteen (16) schools, thirty- two (32) teachers and four hundred and eight (408) students.

The Municipal Chief Executive inspected the parade after some selected students undertook the duties of Christian, Muslim and Traditional prayers (pouring of libation). This was done with the escort of the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Vida Awuku, the Municipal Education Director, Mr. Charles Odoom, ACP Rev. John Opoku and Gavi Bridget, Parade Commander.

The Municipal Education Director, Mr. Charles Odoom in his welcome address emphasized that, democracy has been practiced in schools for years where students have the right to vote and be voted for especially in the case of selecting various prefects for leadership roles to represents their interests in many ways.

  There was a children display where students recited poems in the Ga language and a cultural dance by the Talented Royals International School. One of the students, Miss Adjei from the Gbawe Methodist 1 Basic School in her message, applauded the President, Nana Akuffo Addo for the introduction of free S.H.S and the Municipal Chief Executive for his works towards the education sector in the Municipality. She encouraged all citizens to recognize the importance of free and fair election, transparent governance, active participation of citizen’s in shaping the nation’s destiny and also renew their commitment in upholding the values that has brought the country this far.

In the address delivered by Hon. Michael Danquah, the MCE, he expressed his gratitude to the Traditional rulers and other stakeholders for their warm reception. He explained that, the ‘’pride’’ in democracy stems from recognizing the empowerment and inclusion a state provides to its citizens.

‘’A nations pride in its democracy reflects its commitment to fairness, justice and the belief in the collective wisdom and potential of its people to shape their own culture’’, he disclosed.

 A speech delivered by Hon. Andrew Oppong on behalf of Hon. Tina Naa Ayele Mensah, urged all citizens to get their shoulders on the wheel, change their attitudes towards work and time and work in the collective interest of the country. She also entreated the new MCE, Hon. Danquah to serve the public office and the people with humility, transparency and accountability.

The ceremony had the presence of the Presiding Member, Hon. Wilfred Ayitey Blankson, Supt. Daniel Turkson, the District Police Commander, Dept, Supt. Thomas Quartey (Immigration), Oblogo Lamptey, the Oblogo Chief, other Traditional Rulers, Assembly Members, staff from the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, personnel from the security services, the ambulance service, teachers and students from various schools and many more.

Certificates were presented to the various schools for their participation as well as that of a debate competition held in the Municipality. Gbawe Methodist Basic 3 and Gbawe Islamic Preparatory School emerged the winners for the day’s ceremony for primary and Junior High School respectively.
