INAUGURATION OF NEW ASSEMBLY MEMBERS AND ELECTION OF PRESIDING MEMBER

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly inaugurated the newly elected Assembly Members at the Assembly Hall on Monday, February 12, 2024. The event was organized to administer the oath to the Assembly Members, charging them with carrying out their duties in the various communities.

The program was chaired by Madam Vida Awuku, the Municipal Coordinating Director, and was graced by The Regional Co-ordinating Director and Alhaji Suleman, the President’s Representative, The Attorney-General Representative, Rev. Phillip Martey, Supt. Minister, Methodist Church, Traditional rulers, Supt. Daniel Turkson, the District Police Commander, Security personnel, Assembly Members, Heads of Department for the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Representatives from the Electoral Commission, Party members, and other guests.

During the swearing-in period, a misunderstanding arose resulting in only eleven (11) out of twenty (20) members presenting themselves to be sworn in. The security service ensured that order was maintained and the program proceeded as planned.

In his address, Alhaji Suleman, the President's representative, highlighted the responsibilities entrusted to Assembly members: planning, resource mobilization, decision-making (including the formulation of bye-laws), and community transformation. Stressing the significance of the occasion, he underscored its role in advancing decentralization, in line with Article 35 (6D) of the 1992 constitution.

‘’ Your people require of your selflessness, devotion, a very accountable stewardship, and above all, your ability to articulate the needs of the people to guide district governance agenda’’, he said.

The subsequent phase, the election of the Presiding Member, saw Hon. Wilfred Ayitey Blankson run unopposed and secure unanimous support from Assembly Members, thus assuming the role of presiding member. In his inaugural address, he urged all members to uphold integrity in their duties, emphasizing the collective effort needed for the Municipality's progress.
