WGMA HOLDS THIRD ORDINARY MEETING

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assemblys Second Session of the Fourth Assembly met for the third time this year. 

 

The session began on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the Institute of Technical Supervision (ITS) auditorium, and was presided over by Presiding Member, Hon. Andrew Oppong Amoako, flanked on both sides by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly (WGMA), Hon. Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, and the newly posted Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Madam Vida Awuku.

 

Nii Brenya Abesu (Jaase), Naa Afia Tawia  (Queen mother, Lafa), Naa Kwartsoo Pappoe ( Queen mother, Mallam), Assembly members from various electoral areas in the Municipality, heads of the various departments, and zonal council representatives attended the session.

 

The MCE thanked Hon. Mercy Quansah for her service until her retirement in his sessional address. 

Madam Nancy Pertey was lauded for holding the fort until Madam Vida Awuku took over as Municipal Coordinating Director, the MCE also thanked the Hon Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah (MP) and Deputy Minister of Health for being the force of positive change and conduit of most of the successes the Assembly continues to pride in. 

 

The Assembly scored 96% on the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT), one of the highest in the country, according to the address.

 

In terms of community and social welfare development, twenty-one (21) persons with disabilities (PWDs) had received assistance from the District Assemblys Common Fund (DACF) in the form of monetary assistance, chest freezers, cooking pots, and male footwear, among other things. 

 

A total of sixty-three(63) households from seven(7) communities were also recorded as beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program, out of seven(7) electoral areas in the municipality. 

The communities were Gbawe, Mandela, New Weija, Tetegu, Weija Leprosarium, Weija, and Wiaboman. 

 

Concerning agriculture, the Agriculture Department was noted to have carried out a series of sensitization and disinfection exercises within the Municipality to control the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF) pandemic. 

During the review period, home and farm visits were made to farmers to disseminate extension information. 

The Department also brought the EU-OLIVES abattoir, feed mill, and breeding station projects to light through consultation meetings with stakeholders.

The Department monitored the Green Ghana trees planted in June in collaboration with NADMO. They noticed that the trees are flourishing.

 

In July 2022, the PRIMED project was also launched in collaboration with the Assembly, with the goal of establishing information centers in some of the municipalitys flood-prone areas. 

 

The NADMO officers fortitude during the severe floods in some parts of the Municipality during the first week of October was not overlooked. 

 

Hon. Tina Mensah, Empire Cement Factory Limited, Mr. Henry Fleischer, Kasapreko Limited, Accra Premium Foundation (NGO), Cassona Outreach (NGO), and others who wished to remain anonymous were among those who assisted in the aftermath of the floods.

 

Concerning education, the MCE stated that a total of four thousand sixty-nine(4,069) candidates from both private and public schools in the municipality sat for the 2022 BECE, with two thousand, one hundred and twenty(2120) females and the rest males. 

 

He also mentioned the Municipal Education Directorates strategies for preparing candidates. They included, among other things, marking coordination, subject briefing for all JHS3 candidates, chief examiner interactions with teachers, and municipal mocks.

 

The Honourable MCE praised the success of Operation Clean Your Frontage in terms of sanitation and public health. 

Five hundred and ninety-five(595) notices were said to have been served, out of nine hundred and fifty-five (955) inspected premises within the municipality, with five(5) sanitation cases being prosecuted in court. 

Mallam Junction to Mallam Station, Weija, parts of Oblogo, Topbase, Kokroko lorry park, Djanman, SCC, and McCarthy are among the communities served.

 

The MCE further proceeded to present to the august house the financial budget and expenditure for the year so far, as compared to the previous year.

 

In terms of projects, the MCE announced the completion of a 2-unit KG Block at Weija, as well as the EU open vendor shed at Gbawes modern abattoir. 

Other notable projects include the construction of a fence wall at Weija Zonal Council, which is currently about 70% complete, and the construction of the Assembly Office complexs first floor, which is about 50% complete. 

 

Another noteworthy accomplishment was the construction of an ultramodern AstroTurf at Gbawe. 

The construction of a 45-bed capacity childrens hospital in Akawe was also mentioned. 

 

The construction of steel footbridges at vantage points throughout the municipality to ease traffic and reduce recurring accidents was also addressed, with plans for the start of said projects well underway.

Selected areas under consideration include Mallam Junction, Weija Junction, Choice Junction, White Cross Junction and Jayee University Junction.

 

The General Assembly meeting is expected to end on Thursday, 20th October 2022.
