WGMA Hosts International Literary Day Celebration.

International Literary Day falls on September 8th every year. The day is celebrated annually worldwide.

This year's event was hosted by the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly at the Mallam Kokroko Park on Thursday, 12th September 2019.

The UNESCO theme for the year 2019 is, ' Literary and Multilingualism.'

The national theme for the year is, 'Protecting and Preserving Our Indigenous Languages through Literary. '

The event saw chiefs and elders of Gbawe, officials of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly and the Non-formal Division of the Ministry of Education, in attendance.

Others were Assembly Members and members of the public.

Delivering the key note address on behalf of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Hon Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, extended greetings from the President and the Regional Minister to the gathering.

He said the main focus of the celebration, is to advance the literary agenda for individuals, communities and societies.

The modern term literacy includes the ability to use  language, numbers, images, computers and basic means to understand, communicate, gain useful knowledge, solve mathematical problems and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture, he said.

Hon Patrick Kumor (MCE) said the free SHS is geared at eradicating illiteracy.

Many, he said, struggle to read and write our native language. He, therefore, urged parents to communicate with their children in the local dialect.

The Municipal Chief Executive ended by thanking the facilitators for choosing Weija-Gbawe as the hosting grounds.

The Director of the Non-Formal Education Division of the Ministry of Education, Mr Francis Asumadu, pledged their commitment to take a bold lead in their crusade to expand the use of indigenous languagesin literacy delivery.
