Distribution Of Life Jackets

n the electioneering year of 2016, the touring of Weija/Gbawe constituency by the New Patriotic Party led by the constituency first vice chairman who was the NPP constituency campaign’s manager in the person of Mr. Patrick K. B Kumor discovered the predicament of communities close to the dam site.

The terrible nature of the old and only existing dam bridge over the lake had become a death trap forcing communities in and around the area to cross the lake using canoes without outboard motors and life jackets.

The situation was very disturbing to the then constituency campaign manager when he witnessed scores of school pupils routinely crossing the lake to school in the morning and back home in the evening without personal protective equipment (life jacket).

He led a campaign then to elicit government’s response to the plight of the poor children but this did not work.

In the first quarter of last year when the NPP government took over governance he visited the site again promising them of his governments support with about fifty (50) life jackets.

Prior to his nomination as the Municipal Chief Executive for Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly he spearheaded a move that saw donation of six (6) of the life jackets to the community.

On Tuesday 14th September 2018 Hon. Patrick K. B Kumor’s seventh day in office as the MCE of Weija/Gbawe Municipal saw him lead a team of delegation from the Assembly with the likes of the Municipal Coordinating Director; Mrs Mercy Quansah, a cross-section of the Assembly members and NPP constituency executives donating fourteen more life jackets to the Weija-Dam site communities.

The canoe operators and pupils were clouded with joy at the gesture. The MCE remarked the essence of the life jackets to the beneficiaries. He went on further to admonish the pupils to esteem their life more important by wearing the life jackets each time they had to cross the lake with the canoe. Hon Patrick K. B Kumor went on further to caution the pupils against wearing their school bags on the life jacket a situation that could render the life saving device worthless should an eventuality occur.

He assured the community of his plans to seek governments support to construct a retaining bridge over the lake as a long term solution. The Municipal Coordinating Director on her part surcharged the canoe operators not to carry any pupil on the canoe if they refused to wear the life jackets. She further directed the operators to take good care of the life jackets.

The head of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for the municipal demonstrated the right way of wearing the jacket and the use of an attached whistle in the event of a canoe capsizing. Demonstration of the effectiveness of the life jackets was carried out on the river.

The NADMO municipal coordinator was tasked to check on the life span of the life jackets and how often they have to be changed.

Finally, Hon Patrick K. B Kumor officially handed over the gesture to the canoe operators. Mrs Faustina Forson. The Education Directorates Circuit Supervisor for the area expressed their appreciation for the donation. Check these pictures out. Here
